I was gifted this beautiful time capsule of Victorian photographs and it’s leading to a series of oil paintings.

A Remembered Past
I find it absolutely fascinating seeing photographs of past lives, pictures with no names attached. People who were born, lived and died, just like all of us. Poignant with a dose of melancholia too.

We all think that our lives are the most important thing, the act of living - and of course it is for us as individuals and those closest to us - but the bigger picture (pun intended) is that we all come and go and we’re only ever remembered by the people who knew us. Until they go too. Besides through remnants like photos and objects.

I often wonder how our generation’s past will be remembered when our lives are so digitally transposed. And in an ever-changing world moving at a quite startling technological speed.

I suppose, as an artist, I’d like to live on in some small way by the paintings I create.
