In the studio (2023)

I’ve been busy working on new paintings and fresh themes this year.

SEQUENCES

The large commission below, ‘Lifecycle’ (and the associated smaller studies), explores time, memory, birth, and decay.  Melding my love of surface manipulation, mark-making and anatomy, it explores the endless sequences and semiotics played out as part of the act of living.

THE VISTORS

A box of late 19th century photographs (‘Carte Vista’ or ‘Visiting Card’) was gifted to me last year and they’ve led me to work on a series of much larger oil paintings, ‘The Visitors’.

These pieces, in progress, deal again with permanence, memory and lived experience. A menagerie of the fantastical, dream-like and slightly bizarre. Apparitions of the past.

A memento mori on existence and place, of time and geological scale - like sedimentary rock laid down with only vestiges remaining.

To quote The Kinks, ‘people take pictures of each other just to prove that they really existed’.
