Maheskhali Island / by David Johnstone

A MULTI-ETHNIC ISLAND OFF THE COAST OF COX BAZAR, SOUTHERN BANGLADESH

ith a mixed Buddhist, Muslim and Hindu population, Maheskhali was a great little trip and a chance to see the beautiful mangrove forests on the Bay of Bengal.

I took a CNG to the port with my fixer, Aman, then a speedboat to the island, picking up an auto-rickshaw (basically a pushbike with a small electric engine - my first time) once ashore.

Temples, Mosques and Pagodas all sat peacefully together - as they should - along with markets and bazars. On the speedboat back, with a beautiful setting sun over the mangrove forest full of birds, I reflected that this was the reason I enjoy travelling so much.

I managed to catch sunset on Cox’s Bazar beach. I’m leaving for Chittong soon and it’s been a relaxing and thought-provoking trip to the south of the country.
